It seems that Donald Trump will win this year’s presidential elections in the US. While this is undoubtedly a very bad turn of events given Trump’s undeniable extreme racism and sexism we have to take note of the fact that the binary staged between Trump and Harris was a deeply misleading one.
Neither Trump nor Harris can promise a true alternative for the United States and the world as both subscribe to oppressive policies and serve the interests of the capitalist-patriarchal-racist system albeit in different ways. Even though I understand the anxieties felt by many oppressed and progressive groups and individuals who voted for Harris and hoped that she would win, as an anarchist I firmly believe that voting is futile and ultimately serves the maintenance of the status quo and the Capitalist State. More precisely, in this case the American people had to choose between a nationalist/racist/sexist capitalist and a progressive politician who is also a woman of colour but who has declared her intention to continue along the path of Biden’s foreign policy that actively supports the genocide in Gaza and who has also taken a problematic stance on several issues concerning minorities and oppressed groups like her support for an increase in border security, the fact that she hasn’t taken a stance on the issue of asylum for refugees, her 2015 federal court motion to block gender-affirming medical care for a transgender inmate in California, her past swerf views epitomized by her opposition to a San Francisco ballot measure to decriminalize sex work in 2008 that were followed by a more progressive turn in later years that did not however move beyond the support for a Nordic approach to sex work or her assertion that she believes in capitalism and she is not a socialist.
Moreover, US progressive politics has so far functioned through the moral and political extortion that demands of the American people to vote for Harris in order to prevent the rise of fascism represented by Trump or as the lesser of two evils. Many celebrities and public figures but also activists and radicals have subscribed to this tactic. Personally, I feel that this idea of the lesser of two evils represents a huge compromise with the existing order of things and is profoundly anti-radical and anti-revolutionary.
In any case i hope that despite the present situation the American people, the oppressed and marginalised groups and individuals in the US will be able to fight for their rights and for a better world in the days and years ahead. And as we say in Greece ”hope dies last”.
